Tomorrow…  As with so many people right now, I had plans for tomorrow and for many tomorrows after that. I am a dreamer and adventurer. This Spring there were to be many adventures. And just like everyone else in the world, I watched as one by one each was cancelled. I was reminded of James words, “Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.’ Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, ‘If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that’.”(James 4:13-15) I remember my dad used to say, “Lord willing” after everything and to be honest it annoyed me. I believed it or so I thought, but it felt forced, but now I am realizing that it is helpful to have that attitude, without it, there is a false sense of control. It allows one to hold things loosely. In January there was no reason for me to think that all of April would get cancelled. There was no reason to declare Lord willing over such plans, but really all of life is Lord willing. Solomon warns us not to boast about tomorrow. “Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.” (Proverbs 27:1)

This is not a doomsday mind set, it is a freedom mindset. It is admitting I do not control life. I can plan and enjoy that process, but holding it loosely lets me receive whatever gifts may be in the plans whether they happen or not. It helps me to release things that are not for me. The recent events of our time are definitely good practice of holding all loosely, “if the Lord wills”. So Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble. (Matthew 6:24) The one thing I can control is choosing to hold onto the one who is the Creator and outside of time. I can boast in Him. The one who created time, days, order, and seasons holds my days and times, I can trust Him in this because He will not change. He is faithful and His mercies are new every morning.

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8

  1. Yes, this week has shown us we are not in control nearly as much as we like to think we are. I’m still struggling a bit with that, but it is good to be remined of God’s faithfulness and that he doesn’t change.

  2. Actually, I’m in control,
    and it’s me who sets the pace
    that sustains, and keeps me whole
    to finish out the race.
    It’s my choice to greet the day
    with a smile or with a frown,
    and my choice just what to say:
    anxious words, or play the clown.
    There are some, I’ll admit,
    who take umbrage with my levity,
    but before they have a fit,
    “As charged, dudes, I am GUILTY!”
    Let them weep and wail and moan;
    they’ll find my text-jokes on their phone.

  3. Peggy, I’m with you. My gram always said the same. The Lord is turning all our hearts and minds to the only One who is sovereign and faithful.

  4. Yes He’s in control and it IS so freeing to think that way. I dont know how people ever manage to get through any challenge without knowing God who holds it all together. Praying very specially for those alone at this time, without the One who charts our entire life. Thankyou for the reminder.🌻
