Join… Years ago I did the Experiencing God Bible Study by Henry Blackaby. In it Blackaby suggests we need to look where God is already at work around us, and join Him in that work. It seems almost too simple, but really it is about our focus, and learning to spot God’s activity. Once He has my attention, it is a matter of trusting and obeying whatever role He has for me as I join Him.
When we first went into full time ministry, and for many years after, I would look at the needs and figure out how I could meet them. I would try to plug as many holes as possible. If I was able to do so, I did. There does not seem to be a precedence for this in the Bible. When someone sees a need and tries to solve it on their own, it usually ends up a mess . But when God seeks out the people, and invites them to join Him in the work He has already begun, there is a plan and power unleashed.
I am reminded of Moses when he saw a fellow Hebrew in need and took matters into his own hands to protect the man. One man lost his life and Moses became a fugitive. It totally backfired. When God met Moses in the wilderness tending sheep, He shared with Moses how He had heard the cries of His people and wanted Moses to join Him in freeing the Israelites and accomplishing His goals. It would be challenging, but there would be freedom and new life in joining God where He was already working.
Too many times I have seen a need and not waited, or even asked God what He was doing in it, or if He wanted me to join in. These days I am trying to remember to see if God is already at work in areas that have moved my heart, or caught my attention, and then ask Him if and how He would like me to join.
* I am joining Five Minute Fridays in a 31 day Writing Challenge. Each day I will be writing on a different word prompt for at least 5 minutes for the month of October.
